The Merits of Long HDMI Cables

HDMI cables have become industry standard in regards to audio-video connections. While most HDMI cables run for shorter lengths, there is some question as to how efficiently longer HDMI cables will work. HDMI cable is made up of twisted pairs of copper conductors; these are for small gauge wire rather than the typical coaxial cable. Due to this design, some problems can occur when the cable is run over long distances. Many question the effectiveness of longer HDMI cables as some may alter the signal so much that it interferes with data transmission.

Before any HDMI cable is sold, it must be tested by licensed HDMI test centres. If they are able to pass these tests, then they receive certification. Today, there are some longer HDMI cables that have received this certification. Some of these have been in lengths of over 10 metres while others have measured exactly 13 metres. This means that according to tests, these longer HDMI cable lengths do not reduce the quality of the signal that they transmit. Most HDMI cables in the newer versions are your best bets. Usually these will offer longer lengths with this appropriate certification. You may find longer HDMI cables than 13 meters; if you do, ask to verify the certification as some longer lengths might not have passed.

Longer HDMI cables can be purchased in different quality levels. Most professionals maintain that the cheaper HDMI cables work just as well as the more expensive ones. Usually there is no difference in the picture or sound quality you will get from an expensive HDMI cable versus a cheaper HDMI cable. However, if your HDMI cable will be installed in hidden places like behind walls, in ceilings and similar places, then you might want to consider opting for the more expensive HDMI cable. Given its higher quality, you might be less likely to need to have your installation revisited. Usually the more expensive HDMI cable does have thicker copper wire and this makes it better for longer runs of cable. The more you spend on the higher quality HDMI cable is still less than what it would be when refitting at your installation.
